Who we are
Who We Are
The African Union Methodist Protestant (A.U.M.P.) Church, established in 1813 by Peter Spencer in Wilmington, Delaware, stands as the first incorporated, independent African-American denomination in the United States. Rooted in Wesleyan theology and the Holiness movement, the A.U.M.P. Church was born out of a desire for self-governance and spiritual autonomy, providing a space where African Americans could worship freely and lead their congregations without external control . Today, the A.U.M.P. Church continues to uphold its founding principles, fostering communities of faith, resilience, and service across the Mid-Atlantic region. Through worship, education, and outreach, we remain committed to spreading the Gospel and empowering individuals to live lives of purpose and dignity.
